Types of Domain names

We all know that domain names usually end in .com, .net and .org. These three domains are the most popular and considered the most important domains to have. Org domain was intended to be used by non for profit businesses, but at this time can be used by anyone. The domain list also include .edu, that only recognized educational universities can acquire. The domain list further goes on to include many more domains that are accessible all over the country both within the United States and internationally. Here recently mobi domain has been added to the list of top level domains.

Large companies spend thousands of dollars every year buying up .com domains, org domains, tv domains and other top level domains for their business. The sad part is people usually see these domains and don’t even realize they have a wider choice to pick from.

ICANN controls and oversees the allocation of top domains around the world. There are now 7 new top domains that are approved for around the world use:
1. .aero
2. .biz
3. .coop
4. .info
5. .museum
6. .name
7. .pro

The best part about these domains is that they are recognized and will work all over the world. Not all domains will do that.

Below you will see a domain list and the creditability of each.

1. .com, .net, .org domain: This is the most popular of all domains. More sought after than any other domain
2. .co.uk, .fr, .jp etc. – Country specific domains are an excellent way to tell where they originate from and are pretty popular.
3. .uk.com, .web.com or anything dot com usually is considered a dub domain. Sub domains are not usually used by large corporations or companies.
4. .mobi domain. Is used by many companies that need to broadcast through mobile phones
5. new.net is not as popular as of yet but is increasing gradually.
6. .tv domain: used for rich media websites: anyone can get .tv domain.

Making your choice on what domain to go with will depend on the availability, the reason, and the look and feel you want your domain to have. There are over 9,000,000 .com domains listed already and registered. Due to the tight limitations on com domains you may want to check into org domains or try to find a domain list.

A few reasons why to establish a domain:
1. Gives your website an address in cyber world
2. Domains can be resold, leased or traded
3. Permanent email address
4. SEO: Search engine optimization, or better search rank
5. Builds credibility
6. Increases visibility

Even if you find the perfect domain on the domain list, keep in mind that even after you have bought and registered the domain, you don’t actually “own” the name. All you have done is established the right to use the name. Do your homework before you set out on buying a domain. You want your domain to fit for your individual need, so check into all avenues possible before registration.
